Joan Bohler Adams
1937 - 2009
Submitted in loving memory by Marvin Adams and Family
Love…that was Joan…
Joan was a person that never left anyone out… she lived her faith, loved her family, and enjoyed her friends. No one remained a stranger for long with Joan Adams.
Joan Ruth Bohler was born May 12, 1937 in Ashland Pennsylvania. Her family moved to Ridley Park, PA where she graduated high school in 1955. She met Marvin Adams in 1956 and they married in 1958. Theynever stopped dating.
Joan raised a beautiful family with Marv that included two daughters and a son. She worked as the school secretary in the Cobb County school system in Georgia where she opened two new schools. She left the school system to work in the business that she and Marv started. Together they grew it into a very successful enterprise. They retired in 2000.
Joan never rested in retirement. She filled the days with golf, church activities, theater, trips and family activities. She and Marv attended every grandchildren’s function that was physically possible (considering they have seven grandchildren). The grandchildren knew their “Nana” was there for them.
Joan and Marv celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with a cruise that included all of their children and grandchildren. Everyone had a wonderful time.
Unfortunately, Joan was experiencing back pain during this trip. She had bouts with it prior to the trip but the cause was never pinpointed. Upon return, she made a doctor’s appointment to find out why her back was hurting. The doctors discovered a tumor at the base of her spine. She underwent a body scan and that was when doctors discovered two lesions on her lungs. She was diagnosed with inoperable Stage IV lung cancer on June 25th, 2008.
She went under the care of Dr. Thomas Seay. Over the course of the next 11 months, she endured 30 chemotherapy sessions, 16 radiation treatments, and multiple CAT/PET scans. She had her good days and bad days but she never complained. She still lived her life as best she could. She enjoyed her plays, her friends, and her family.
On May 3, 2009, she and Marv made the decision to enter hospice care. There was nothing more that could be done. She passed away June 6, 2009 with her family near by.
Joan will always be an inspiration to everyone. She has shown us how to have a life well lived.
