The Florence Hays Erb Clinical Specialty Center
William Erb shares a vision with Saint Joseph’s; to be the leading Lung Cancer program in the Southeast. He decided to help make that vision a reality by donating $5 million in memory of his wife, Florence, to create the Florence Hays Erb Clinical Services Center. This is the largest philanthropic gift in Saint Joseph’s history.
“It has been the tradition of Saint Joseph’s to name rooms and one building in honor of Sisters of Mercy who have faithfully served the Atlanta community for more than 127 years. This will be the first time Saint Joseph’s will name a facility in honor of a donor. We can’t think of a more deserving way to recognize Bill Erb for his generosity to our lung cancer program,” says Sister Jane Gerety, RSM, senior vice president, sponsorship.
The generous gift is being made in memory of Florence Hays Erb, who passed away due to lung cancer. Florrie Erb was an entrepreneur and co-founder of ERB Industries with her husband, Bill, a graduate of Georgia Institute of Technology and M.I.T. Florrie was a mentor to many and shared her nature as a quintessential “overcomer” with all who knew her.
“Florrie’s lung cancer brought her to Saint Joseph’s and helped her appreciate the hospital’s vision of becoming the leading lung cancer treatment program in the Southeast,” says her husband, Bill. “This gift, made in her honor by her family will provide expanded services at Saint Joseph’s for lung cancer patients and their families.” To make that vision happen, Saint Joseph’s will establish the following:
- Full participation in the ongoing IELCAP (International Early Lung Cancer Assessment Project), enabling continuous research that documents the effects of early detection using the most reliable screening and early detection methods and providing screening scholarships to qualified high-risk individuals.
- Pulmonary Clinic, thus expanding the current Cancer Center by implementing the multidisciplinary clinic concept for patients─a “one stop shop” where all tests and consults are done in one location using state-of-the-art technology and evidenced-based medicine to determine treatment and outline plan of care.
- Expanded scope and types of research related to cancer treatment and prevention in the pre-clinical and clinical areas through Saint Joseph’s Research Institute and its affiliation with Georgia Institute of Technology.
- Recruitment of leading physicians & scientists to help with cancer service delivery and treatment.
- Pulmonary Rehab Center, providing individualized exercise and breathing program to improve blood oxygen levels, endurance, stamina, and quality of life for patients during and after treatment.

Bill Erb - 2009 Hummingbird Award Winner
In 2008, Bill created a program for his employees by which he subsidized CT lung cancer screening at Saint Joseph's Hospital. Employees of Erb Industries who are at high risk of lung cancer can now get a CT lung cancer screening for only $100, a mere fraction of its actual cost.
Bill has been a tireless advocate in the fight against lung cancer.
